FEBRUARY: Social Media Detox

FEBRUARY: Social Media Detox

“Sometimes you have to take a break from the noise to find your own voice.” — Kendrick Lamar

By now, we’ve all been there: mindless scrolling, losing dozens of minutes — even hours — without realizing it. Social media gives us so much: a place to express ourselves, make money, entertain, educate, and peek into the lives of others. But it also shows us carefully crafted versions of reality, making it easy to compare ourselves to illusions. In a world of constant pings and posts, our minds can feel overwhelmed and distracted from what really matters. This month, we’re stepping back. We’re creating space for deeper connection — with ourselves, with what lights us up, and with the people we truly care about. We’re choosing a digital detox: consciously unplugging from non-essential devices for set times. Even short breaks can help us gain clarity, reduce anxiety, and build a more mindful relationship with technology.

Week 1 — Mindful Meditation / Reflection

“Finding Peace in the Present Moment”

We all need IRL (“in real life”) time — moments away from our phones to simply enjoy life as it is. We could use more time off the constant stream of thoughts, images, and information that social media pours into us. This week, we’re going to purposefully slow down and sink into the present moment.

I’ve created a meditation you can return to whenever you find yourself mindlessly doom-scrolling, or using your devices as tools of escape. It’s also great to use before switching tasks after long stretches on your phone or computer.

The Meditation

Settle into a comfortable spot where you won’t be disturbed. Close your eyes. Begin with a few deep breaths: inhale deeply through your nose, feel your lungs fill, then let your body relax with each exhale.

As you breathe, bring your awareness to the here and now. Call your energy into the current space. Calm your mind. Imagine your thoughts as a clear, still lake — no ripples from notifications, no turbulence from distractions. Picture this lake stretching out for yards, offering a calm and serene resting place for you and your thoughts.

If your mind feels more like a stormy ocean than a still lake, allow it. Let the waves rise and fall. Notice where you are today. Simply observe, without judgement. Our minds shift from day to day as we process events and changes. If thoughts about social media or devices arise, gently acknowledge them — then let them drift away, returning to the present.

Notice the sensations you feel without judgement. Tune into the peace that the present moment offers — whether in the lake, the river, or on the shores of a wide ocean.

Spend 10-15 minutes in this peaceful state, simply being present. Try this meditation once or twice a day. Feel free to adjust the time: more or less as it fits you.

WEEK 2 — Breathwork / Pranayama: “Box Breath”

This week, let’s work with our breath — cleansing and clearing space for mental peace. I like to use this technique as soon as I wake up. It’s common to open our eyes, reach for our phone, check notifications, and jump right into action. But I try to be intentional about clearing my mornings and spending time with myself before letting the world into my orbit.

The Practice

Sit comfortably, with your spine straight. Begin by inhaling deeply through your nose for a count of four, imagining fresh, clean air filling your lungs.

Hold the breath gently for another count of four. Then exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of four, visualizing any tension or mental clutter being released. Finally, hold the breath out for a count of four.

Continue this cycle for 5-7 minutes, using your breath to cleanse your mind and body of the stresses associated with social media. If you can, pick a specific time this week to practice the technique. Maybe it’s before sleep to wind down, or first thing in the morning before heading outside. Be flexible, and enjoy the discovery.

Reflections: What feelings or sensations did you notice during your practice?

WEEK 3 — Journaling Prompts:

“Reflecting on Your Digital Habits”

Social media has become so common in our lives that we rarely pause to assess its effects. What felt foreign just 10–15 years ago is now as routine as breathing. This week, let’s make time to check in with ourselves and reflect on the impact social media is having. Choose moments of stillness where you can slow down and sit with the following prompts.

The Prompts

  • How does social media influence my mood and self-esteem?

  • What emotions arise when I spend extended time on social platforms?

  • What benefits might I experience by reducing my time on social media this week?

Use these prompts to explore your relationship with social media and how it impacts your daily life. Let your journal be a space for honest reflection and discovery

WEEK 4 — Mindful Practice: Digital Curfew

Here’s a great idea: set a “digital curfew” or “social media curfew” for yourself. Choose a specific time in the evening (for example, 7 PM), after which you will completely disconnect from all digital devices — or at least spend time off social media.

The Practice

Spend the rest of the evening doing things that nourish your soul: read a book, enjoy a hobby, or spend quality time with loved ones. Notice how this intentional disconnection gives you more of what you actually need: peaceful rest, heart-to-heart conversations, time to invest in your hobbies or important tasks, more moments for personal reflection.

Reflect on how it feels to reclaim your time and attention from digital distractions.
