JANUARY: Setting Intentions

JANUARY: Setting Intentions

“An intention is the creative power that fulfills our heart’s desires.” – Deepak Chopra

As an artist and business owner, I’ve learned how quickly goals can change. One day an idea feels perfect, and the next, trends shift, supply chains move, and everything’s up for review. Last year, instead of only setting goals, I made intentions the foundation for everything I did. Staying true to your intentions is how you stay ahead of the curve.

Intentions anchor our actions, aligning us with our true purpose and values. I get it — it’s the start of a new year, full of endless opportunities. We want to stay open, flexible, and available for all the possibilities that might unfold. The ideas are flowing, the mood boards are alive, and the planners are color-coded dreams. But then FOMO creeps in. We get stuck in analysis paralysis — afraid of making the wrong move, trying to cram everything we’ve ever wanted into the next 12 months.

Take a deep breath. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and orchards don’t grow overnight. Setting intentions allows us to move forward with clarity and faith, leaving space for miracles to happen. This month is about creating clear, meaningful intentions to guide us — your North Star. The path may shift, but we never lose sight of where we’re headed. We plant the seeds, then trust them to grow in their own time.

Week 1 — Mindful Meditation & Reflection

“Grounding in Your Intentions”

What in life gives you actual peace and pleasure? What are your intentions for growth this year? And — for real — what lights up your soul? In a world full of distractions (yes, many of them live right in your pocket), it’s easy to let other people or outside expectations dictate what you should want. But freedom comes when you choose your path and begin walking it. This week, we’re going to meditate and really sit with our intentions. The goal: normalizing planting the right seed without needing to control the outcome. Whatever happens is just another step on your journey. By doing this, you build trust with yourself, stay grounded in your actions, and release the things you cannot control — letting them take care of themselves.

Meditation

Find a quiet, comfortable space where you can sit or lie down without interruptions. Gently close your eyes, take a deep breath, and let your body relax. Let your natural breath become your guide.

Now imagine a blank canvas. Begin to paint this canvas with the colors, words, or images that represent your deepest desires and goals. Take your time and tune into your inner voice — the one that’s been whispering all along.

As you inhale, visualize your intentions taking shape, becoming vivid, clear, powerful. As you exhale, feel yourself releasing doubts, fears, or expectations that don’t serve you.

Stay in this meditative space for about 10–15 minutes, letting your intentions fully form and settle within you. When you’re ready, gently open your eyes. If it feels natural, take a moment to journal what came up or say your intentions aloud. Trust in your ability to bring these intentions into your daily life.

You can return to this practice anytime you need clarity, calm, or just a reset — before planning, making decisions, or at the start of your day.

Week 2 — Breathwork / Pranayama:

This week we will be practicing an Intentional Breathing Exercise.

Bill Walsh, former San Francisco 49ers football coach, has a saying: “The score will take care of itself.” The idea is to simply set your standard and control what you can control: focus on input, being in the right place, speaking sincerely, investing in yourself — and let the rest be. Trust in your actions and thoughts. One thing we can control is our breath. Calming our breath allows us to prioritize and settle our energies before we take the next steps toward accomplishing our goals. I’ve learned that making decisions from a space of tranquility channels more energy into the steps needed to execute them. So yes — I will sit and meditate in the car or in my room before making something crucial happen, just to make sure it aligns with my intentions.

The Practice

Come to a comfortable seated position, sit up tall, let your spine be straight, and rest your hands on your knees. Take a deep breath in through your nose, slowly, for a count of four — feeling the air everywhere in your chest and belly. Let the inhale fully open you up.

Hold your breath gently, silently, for another count of four. Let the stillness settle in. Then exhale slowly through your mouth, letting go of tension, fear, or negativity, for a count of six. Let it be smooth, full, intentional.

Continue this rhythm for about 5-7 minutes, letting each breath more closely align you with your intentions. As you breathe, stay present. Notice what comes up — images, thoughts, emotions. Let them move without judgment; don’t push anything away. Just keep coming back to the breath, to the count, to the feeling of release and arrival.

Week 3 — Journaling Prompts: “Clarifying Your Intentions”

Our intentions have the power to shape the outcomes in our lives. Sometimes we need to pause, step back, gain a different perspective. Journaling is proven to help us create space and quiet the many thoughts running through our minds. It’s also a tool to clarify our intentions around different matters. Moving with intention helps us prioritize and simplifies life. It’s cleared so much space for the things I’m truly passionate about.

This week, dedicate time to return to your journal and clarify your yearly, monthly — even daily — intentions.

The Prompts

Take some time to sit with your journal in a peaceful environment. Reflect on the following:

  • What are the key areas of my life where I want to set clear intentions?

  • How do these intentions align with my values and long-term goals?

  • What small steps can I take this week to begin manifesting these intentions?

Write freely. Let your thoughts flow onto the pages, creating a written blueprint of your intentions.

Week 4 — Mindful Practice: Setting Daily Intentions

I like to start my days with intention setting. It helps when things begin to take unexpected turns. As an entrepreneur and creative artist, my days are full of twists, phone calls, and surprises. Setting intentions allows me to stay grounded and steady through all the ebbs and flows.

The Practice

This week, begin each day by setting a simple intention for how you want to show up in the world. Maybe it’s:

  • “Today, I intend to be present and fully engaged in my tasks.”

  • Or: “I intend to approach all challenges with a calm and open mind.”

As your day unfolds, revisit your intention. Notice how it influences your actions, your mindset, and how you respond to things.

Reflections: What impact did your intention-setting have on your days this week?
